Float Tanks in Bangkok

Zero gravity. Zero sound. Zero light. Total reset.

Overview

Floatation therapy, also known as sensory deprivation or REST (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy), involves floating effortlessly in a lightless, soundproof tank filled with body-temperature water saturated with 500+ kilograms of Epsom salt. The buoyancy eliminates all gravitational pressure on your joints and muscles, while the absence of sensory input allows your nervous system to enter a deeply restorative state. Research shows floating reduces cortisol, lowers blood pressure, and increases theta brain wave activity — the same state achieved in deep meditation. Bangkok's float centers range from dedicated studios to multi-modality wellness spaces that combine floating with other recovery treatments.

How It Works

You step into a pod or room filled with approximately 25 centimeters of water heated to skin temperature (35.5°C) and loaded with Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate). The salt density makes you completely buoyant — you float effortlessly without any effort. Once you close the pod and turn off the light, all external stimulation is removed: no light, no sound, no gravity sensation, no temperature differential. Your brain, freed from processing sensory input, shifts into theta state — a deeply relaxed, meditative, and often creative mental state. Sessions typically last 60-90 minutes.

Benefits

  • Profound stress reduction — cortisol drops measurably after a single float
  • Deep muscle relaxation and relief from chronic pain
  • Enhanced creativity, problem-solving, and mental clarity
  • Magnesium absorption through the skin from Epsom salt
  • Improved sleep quality, especially for insomnia sufferers
  • Accelerated recovery from physical training and jet lag
  • A meditative state accessible even to people who struggle with traditional meditation

What to Expect

Arrive 10-15 minutes early for an orientation if it's your first time. You will shower, insert earplugs (to keep salt water out of your ears), and step into the tank or float room. Most people need 10-15 minutes to fully relax and stop fidgeting. The magic happens in the second half of the float — that's when the theta state kicks in. Afterward, you shower off the salt, and most people feel calm, clear, and slightly euphoric for hours. Many float centers offer a quiet lounge area with tea for you to decompress before re-entering the city.

Risks & Considerations

Floating is one of the safest wellness modalities available. The primary concern is claustrophobia, though most tanks allow you to keep the lid open or use a spacious float room instead of a pod. People with open wounds, skin conditions, or recent tattoos should wait until healed. The high salt concentration can sting cuts. Rarely, some people experience mild nausea from the vestibular disorientation of zero gravity. Epileptics should consult their doctor before floating.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I'm claustrophobic?+
Most Bangkok float centers offer both enclosed pods and open float rooms (basically a shallow pool in a private room). You're always in control — you can open the pod lid at any time, and the room never locks. Many claustrophobic people find floating surprisingly comfortable once they try the open-room option.
Will I fall asleep and drown?+
The water is only 25cm deep and the salt density is so high that you float like a cork — it's actually difficult to turn over. Even if you fall asleep (many people do), you'll stay floating on your back. The worst that happens is a bit of salt water in your eyes if you roll.
How is the water kept clean?+
The high salt concentration itself is antimicrobial. Additionally, reputable float centers use UV sterilization, ozone treatment, and filtration systems that process the entire tank volume between each session. The water is typically cleaner than a swimming pool.
